Feedback from the Judges: Located on the waterfront campus of George Brown College in Toronto’s East Bayfront community, Limberlost Place stands as a landmark achievement in sustainable architecture. As the first large-scale mass timber assembly building of its kind in North America, its successful delivery represents a significant advancement in contemporary construction.

The building envelope balances refinement with technical complexity. Its constructability challenges were addressed through the strategic selection of materials and methods tailored to the demands of this innovative structure. Notably, the use of high-performance large-format wall panels enabled timely enclosure, ensuring effective protection of the moisture-sensitive mass timber frame.

Sustainability is embedded throughout the design, including high-performance glazing within a ribbon window system, operable windows, and solar chimneys that support natural ventilation. These features enhance energy performance while contributing to occupant comfort and overall environmental quality.

Delivering a project of this scale and sophistication to such a high standard sets an important benchmark for future mass timber developments. Recognition from the Ontario Glass and Metal Association with the 2026 Excellence in Architectural Glass & Metal – Execution award underscores the exceptional craftsmanship and innovation behind this transformative building.
