OGMA Newsletter – October 2024
Golf Tournament. The OGMA Fall Golf Tournament was held on September 12, 2024, at the beautiful Woodington Lake Golf Club in Tottenham, Ontario. We had a good turnout for the tournament and, as always, the course staff did a fantastic job. The weather was gorgeous, which helped to highlight the beauty of the course. As always, we’d like to express our appreciation for all our tournament sponsors who helped us to make the event a success, including our Trophy-Level Sponsor Yarlmetal Fabricators Inc., and Birdie-Level Sponsors Alcurv Canada Inc., Alumicor Limited, Architectural Glass & Metal Contractors Association (AGMCA), Commdoor Aluminum, CS2 Construction Sales Inc., Gridline Drafting, Imagic Glass, Jamac Sales & Distribution Ltd., Rimac Fabricators Ltd., Spandreltech Ltd., Tremco, and Trulite Glass & Aluminum Solutions.
Fall Bursary Award Winner. At the fall golf tournament, AGMCA’s Noel Marsella was pleased to announce that Humza Memon is the recipient of the joint OGMA/AGMCA $1,000 fall bursary award. Humza finished top of his class at the Finishing Trades Institute of Ontario with a 95.45% grade average. His instructors, James Clifford and Mike Pentz, noted that he has already passed his Certificate of Qualification. Congratulations to Humza on being selected by your instructors as the Glazing Apprentice Honour Student for the fall 2024 term.
2024 Plant Tour. The 2024 OGMA plant tour took place on October 3, 2024, at UL Solutions’ state-of-the-art facility in Scarborough, Ontario. Fifty attendees got an informative guided tour of UL’s fully accredited testing laboratories, where performance testing of windows, doors, skylights, curtain walls, wall systems, and full building envelope assemblies is provided. A networking opportunity, including refreshments, was offered at the conclusion of the tour.
Annual Fishing Derby. The annual OGMA fishing derby took place on August 23, 2024, with the renowned “Hall’emin” fishing charter out of Port Colborne, Ontario. Between the three boats, over forty walleyes were caught. Part of the day’s catch was fried up for lunch at The Whisky and Walleye, with attendees taking home plenty of fresh fish. The weather was perfect, and the lake was calm. All had a fun time!
2025 Awards for Excellence. Although we have just entered the fall season, it is time to start thinking about your potential candidate projects for the 2025 OGMA Awards for Excellence. Nominations for the awards do not open until early January but we encourage our members to start thinking about current or recent projects that you may wish to put forward for consideration in the new year, keeping in mind the perspectives of Design and Execution.
Update on the Board of Directors. The members of the Board of Directors are sad to say goodbye to Greg Parkin, who is leaving the Board at the end of this year. They would also like to say a big thank you to Steven Ringler, who will be stepping down as President after a two-year term. We appreciate everything you both have done over the years and would like to take this time to recognize the time spent volunteering for the association and its members. As always, we encourage energetic industry participants to join the Board and have a positive impact on the glass and metal industry. Please contact any current board member for further information or email info@ogma.ca.
What’s next? We are in the process of making plans for a winter seminar and look forward to seeing everyone next year at CSC Building Expo in February and Top Glass Conference and Exhibits in April. We are also making plans for our next members’ meet-and-greet, which is a great networking opportunity.
