Spring is typically a busy time for the Ontario Glass & Metal Association, and with COVID restrictions well behind us, we are pleased to be able to get back to our usual program of events.
Top Glass Exhibits & Conference. Thank you to our directors, Steve Ringler, Steve Gusterson, April Donvito, Steven Peso, Eric Diotte, and Robert Casellini for representing the Ontario Glass & Metal Association at the Top Glass conference in April. It was a great opportunity to speak to our current members, as well as potential new members, about the exciting new events we have coming up. During the show, Steve Gusterson, Awards Director, presented the prestigious OGMA Awards for Excellence in Glass and Metal Design and Execution. Congratulations to Perkins+Will for their design work on the York University School of Continuing Studies, Toronto, Ontario. The judges found it to be “an elegant and bold building that successfully asserts the school’s identity and culture,” which “at first glance… presents a complexity in building design, and yet upon further understanding a simple geometric logic is discovered.” Congratulations also to Antamex Industries ULC for execution on the New Toronto Courthouse, Toronto, Ontario. The judges acknowledged the “extreme technical challenge of the design of this exterior envelope,” which addressed “the challenge of the heightened contemporary security concerns.”
Spring Seminar. OGMA presented its first seminar of the year, which focused on the hot topic of First-Surface Bird-Friendly Requirements as per Toronto Green Standard, Version 4, on May 18, 2023, at the Richmond Hill Country Club. Michael Mesure, Executive Director, Fatal Light Awareness Program Canada, and Mauro Carreño, Associate, Senior Architect, BDP Quadrangle gave presentations that were enlightening and informative. The seminar was our first event post-COVID and was well-attended by industry participants, who had many questions for each speaker.
Spring Golf Tournament. The OGMA Spring Golf Tournament will be held on June 14, 2023, at the Glen Eagle Golf Club in Bolton, ON. We encourage industry members to join us at this premier 27-hole championship golf course just a few minutes northwest of Toronto. A power cart, barbeque lunch and steak/chicken dinner are included in tournament fees. The OGMA Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented at the tournament. The tournament also provides several excellent sponsorship opportunities that help companies to promote themselves to the industry. Visit ogma.ca/2023-spring-golf-tournament/ for more information and to download the registration and sponsorship forms.
Spring Bursary Award Winner. The Ontario Glass & Metal Association and the Architectural Glass & Metal Contractors Association (AGMCA) are pleased to announce that they will be presenting their bursary award to Luke Parkin at the OGMA spring golf tournament. In the spring and fall of each year, a monetary award is provided to a student enrolled in the apprenticeship program of the Finishing Trades Institute in Vaughan, Ontario. Recipients are selected by the instructing staff at the institute based upon criteria that include displaying exemplary skills, aptitude, and attitude along with a willingness to assist and share ideas with others. Congratulations, Luke and well done!
