Passing of Doug Hotham

Passing of Doug Hotham

In Memory of Douglas Harold Hotham
September 13, 1927 – October 18, 2017

Having just turned 90 a month earlier, Doug passed away peacefully after a brave battle with cancer on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. He is survived by his wife Norma, sons Brent (Kate) and Greg (Janine), Toronto Maple Leaf Alumni. Doug loved his surviving grandchildren Shannon (Gustavo), Scott (Kyla), Andrew (Ashley) and Janis (Alex) and Christine (Steve). He adored his great-granddaughter Violet. Doug also left behind his brother Ray (and the late Joan and their children) and was predeceased by another brother, George. Other relatives (the Stewart family, the Slann family) from London, Ontario, where he grew up, will also mourn his loss. Doug was a very proud and long-time member of Rising Sun Masonic Lodge #129 in Aurora, Ontario, where he made so many friends and was always counted upon to mentor new prospective members. In 1999-2000, Doug served the lodge as the DDGM for his district and was very highly regarded in this capacity. He never said no to any of his brethren when asked to speak or to arrange an event at the lodge; he just couldn’t say no. He will be dearly missed by his brethren at the masonic lodge.

Doug loved to cook and the number of cookbooks and recipes he accumulated is testament to his love of cooking. Growing up, Doug was an avid athlete and excelled at many sports in London, like hockey, baseball, body building, but especially golf. He loved golf and played until his later years.

Doug’s professional career was in the commercial architectural glass industry, starting out sweeping the floors at his uncle’s small glass and window shop in London. He made many lifelong friends in the commercial glass industry on a worldwide basis. A couple of years ago, he was honoured by the OGMA (Ontario Glass Metal Association) with their Lifetime Achievement Award.

There is no funeral service and cremation has taken place as per his wishes.

Because of his love of golf, it is fitting the family is holding a memorial service at St. Andrews Valley Golf Course, 4 Pinnacle Trail in Aurora, on Sunday, October 29, 2017, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.. During the memorial service, a brief Masonic Service will be held At 2:00 p.m. as per Doug’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Doug’s memory to the Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ontario.
